[SOLVED] Icons missing from the system tray

Post by danh on Tue Jun 10, 2008 3:42 pm

If this has happened to you then you know how frustrating it can be, you turn your computer on it starts to load and then in the bottom right hand side of the screen none of your icons have appeared. This seems to be a bug in XP, however there are a few things that can be done to bring them back.....
I will assume that you have checked the properties and have unchecked 'hide inactive icons'
1 thing that i found to work was logging off after loading the computer then logging back in, this seems to allow them to load up or
    goto task manager ('ctl-alt-del')
select processes then look for 'explorer.exe' and click end process, then click file, run and type 'explorer.exe' this also seems to bring most of the icons back....
in the mean time i will look for a permanant fix and add it soon
If anyone out there has the same problem or even better a fix to this problem come and share it Very Happy

    Ostuni workaround-
go to 'my network places' and in the left hand column click 'hide UPnP devices' this has apparently had a 80% success rate for allowing the icons to load up.....
im still looking for a more permanant fix Smile

Actually sort of related to icons on System tray can you do a start up process with MSConfig whereby you can say what programs start up in an order chosen by you rather than windows

you can but again this doesnt seem to sort the problem, its a widespread problem with many options, but in my experience that didnt seem to help everything is in the same order as before which suggest something else is going on.... this does seem to be a big problem affecting many PC's running various software and OS's

Yeah I would love to be able to make some programs actually ATI Catalyst start first before everything else in startup as it can sometimes be a right royal pain in the arse and slows the PC down. I don't mind having it in the system tray but it can be painful sometimes waiting for things to load up. I think I might have to start disabling programs instead.

You may have to rebuild the iconcache

    1. Unhide the system files. (Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Folder Options - View tab and show hidden files)
    2. Click Start button and select Computer.
    3. Navigate to C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Local
    4. Right click on IconCache.db and click Delete.
    5. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
    6. Close the window.
    7. Empty the Recycle Bin.
    8. Restart the computer.
    9. Navigate back to C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Local

You will notice the Size of the IconCache.db file is smaller, and the Date Modified is now the current date.

You may need a couple of restarts before the file re-appears

    Alternatively

    1. Click start
    2. Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Adjust Screen Resolution
    3. From the Colours drop down menu select 16bit if its currently set to 32bit and vice versa
    4. Select Apply and Ok
    5. Restart your PC
    6. Click start
    7. Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Adjust Screen Resolution
    8. Reset the Colours option back to what it was previously set to and select Apply and Ok
    9. Restart your PC again

It should readjust your folders icons

Funnily enough bothwork on XP and Vista Very Happy

    Regards

    Craig

It might have something to do with the display options for the notification bar found in the registry editor. Sometimes these files get logged up with past icons from unused and unistalled software and the icons remain, I suggest cleaning the files out and restarting explorer to fix this

    1. Select Start, Click Run and type Regedit Press Enter.

    2. Navigate to the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

    3. On the right hand side select and delete

    • IconStreams
    • PastIconStreams

    4. Close Regedit

    5. Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to bring up Task manager

    6. Under Processes click Explorer and select End Task

    7. Select File and New Task

    8. Type Explorer.exe and press Enter

When you go into your Taskbar and Start menu properties you should see that at first the volume and network icons are still grayed out, after ten minutes or after a restart these options should come back and are then useable

    Regards

    Craig
